Our Call to the Wall

Event Date:  July 21-22, 2018

Last weekend, the San Onofre Surfing Club put together a small team to compete in the annual  Call to the Wall coalition contest at Malibu. It was a great weekend with clubs from up and down the California coast sharing waves, stories and aloha! Our next contest is August 11 and 12 in Oceanside. There may still be some open spots if you’re interested in competing with us, just shoot us an email at info@sanonofresurfingclub.org.

If not, just come down South of the pier and join us for some fun and cheer for your favorite surfers.

Epic turnout at Aloha Family Day!

Event Date:  July 14, 2018

What began as a cloudy overcast day at Oldmans gave way to a bright and sunny Aloha Family Day on July 14, 2018.  The day began with hot breakfast cooked and served by our Club chef, Kurt Winn, who made sure we were all fueled up for the games to come.  As some kids were getting temporary tattoos under the beach hut, others got their glider planes ready for the races from John Starwarz.  The cherry pit spitting event was next at the dirt road, where both adults and kids took their pit spitting ability to the next level in a contest officiated by Matt Brady and Craig Ephraim.  The day was filled with fun and bragging rights, complete with one-of-a-kind SanO medallions for the winners.  In addition to our delicious lunch provided by the Club, many members contributed in Potluck-style entrees which rounded out our full menu.  We were then treated to the music of Bobby Lombard and his band against the backdrop of Oldmans.  What a day!  The raffle giveway was underway and a plethora of prizes, including two custom longboards shaped by Chris Schroeder and Timmy Patterson, were made possible through generous donations by club members and businesses who consider SanO their second home:

  • Chris Schroeder Surfboards
  • Timmy Patterson Surfboards
  • Hobie Surf
  • Infinity Surf
  • Killer Dana Surf Shop
  • Shelta Hats
  • SunBum
  • Malo'o Racks
  • CatchSurf
  • Olukai
  • Bear Coast Coffee
  • Kor Water
  • NATTi Bar
  • Summer Soul Surf Camp
  • San Clemente Lifeguard Association
  • Monster Energy
  • Paul Carter, artist
  • Lauren Tannehill, artist
  • Michael Tilden, artist

Many thanks to all those who helped run this event which is the Club's largest fundraiser in maintaining and preserving SanO.  Your continued participation and support goes a long way in preserving our beautiful beach.

See you at the next event --> Club Surf Contest on September 8th & 9th!

Ten Buck Chuck Surf Contest

tenbuckchuck.jpg

Event Date:  May 19, 2018

The Ten Buck Chuck is one of two awesome San Onofre Surfing Club contests hosted each year. It is a one day, super casual surf contest held at Old Man’s for the insanely low entry fee of $10 and open to all Club Members of any age and any ability. This contest has been organized by our one and only Charlie (Chuck) Zyvoloski since 2004 and continues to be one of the Club highlights every year.

The highly anticipated “Ten Buck Chuck” was well worth the wait and was a super fun surf contest to start off the year. The morning started off quiet and calm and after the first heat the participants were treated to a light drizzle that lasted for most of the morning.  Surfers are a gritty bunch and they shook it off in stride and enjoyed the delicious selection of Hot Dogs and Bratwurst diligently prepared by “Hot Dog Fred” and chatted with friends between bites. Kevin Wold and Jonathan “JT” Tracy kept the crowd entertained with brilliant announcing that was fun to listen to while describing the action in the water. Non competitor in the contest zone, beware of the golden tongue lash...

Those that stuck out the morning were rewarded with a complete change of conditions and were pleasantly surprised with glassy, fun surf. The showcase of talent at all ages was on display. The star of the show this year was Tommy Witt on a borrowed vintage board from Chris Shroeder. Tommy defied gravity with his uncanny balance and entertained the crowd with maneuvers that were mostly described as “how did he do that?!” At the end of the contest the crowd was treated to a rendition of God Bless America by 3 ½ year old triplet sisters Harper, Avery, and Taylor Wynne. A huge thank you to Charlie Zyvoloski and Sabrina Pearcy for putting on this special day as well as to all of the volunteer judges, tabulators, announcers, merchandise sellers, etc. Special thanks to Pete Herrara for taking on the dreaded task of putting out the buoy which put him in the unfortunate position of surfing his heat with the Costco Stand up foamy which he used to take out the buoy.

The 2018 Ten Buck went down in fine style...

See you next year at the Chuck!
