This year’s Surfing Contest had to have been one of the best ever. The surf was good on Saturday and got way better all day Sunday. What amazed me was the quality of the surfing in general. Every heat was exciting, the Novice tandem was a crackup, and the Eric Hops Session was an all time classic. It seems as if each year it just gets better and better.

Even the new Tiki donated by “Tiki Jay” Lucente seems to have done its job. It was on probation, but now has proven itself.

Once again I’d like to thank all the people who work their tails off all weekend to make the event so much fun and run it so smoothly. It takes a lot of talent and work to make it seem so effortless. Bobby Lombard really does take his responsibility as Director very seriously and does a supreme job. The girls in the tabulating tent do a great job keeping everyone right on the mark. The girls in the merchandise trailer once again saved us from poverty by selling a lot of our fine gear. We really ought to be charging more entry fee if it wasn’t for them. The set-up men and the crew in the contest area did a great job again, and the judges were at their usual professional level. The announcing once again was colorful and fun.

While I’m at this, my thanks to Jenn Ephraim, our Club Secretary, for being so professional and conscientious in her work, and for putting up with me and my shenanigans.

Our new automatic contest timer worked its first contest without even a flub. Even Willy was able to master it. Thanks to Don Bistline for the donation of his time and engineering skills in designing and building it for us. This is proof once again of another talented San Onofre surfer. (If we didn’t surf, we could probably rule the world.)

Thanks for sharing your beach with me and my family. We had a blast, and hope you did, too.

SPRING MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Aloha, fellow Club members! The beach is still looking good, the parking lot and the road are in decent shape, and the waves and the water are still just the same as always. It’s time to dust off the surfboards, ukuleles, and picnic tables and get back down to San Onofre for another great summer season.
First of all, I’d like to thank all you guys I see out there with your buckets and pickers and scoopers picking up the trash of others, repairing the showers, raking the beach and doing all the things that keep the beach as beautiful as always and make it a special place. Don’t think it goes unnoticed or unappreciated. You’re being good role models. We have a lot of visitors who also love San Onofre, but who don’t always pay much attention to cleanliness or courtesy. We are the stewards of our beach and need to be the role models for others. Thank you!
Thanks again to all the volunteers, including the Board of Directors: Without you our events wouldn’t happen at all. It’s always exciting to see the willing attitudes and the tireless efforts.
As you know, we supported the State in banning alcohol on the beach last July 1st. I hope you’ve all noticed a difference, especially in the cleanliness on Saturday and Sunday mornings. No more pallet fires and red cups everywhere. And the Rangers have a lot more control over many situations, which was a big concern. About a month into the ban on alcohol, I heard a guy say, “This is the first time I’ve ever been here sober, and it’s a really nice place.”
I’m sure you’re all aware of the proposed State Parks budget cuts by the Governor. I heard they found the money for the Lifeguards, but the rest of the staff will be running on a tight belt, so the more assistance we can give them the better. We’ve always had a good rapport with the State and want to help them in any way we can.
We’ve got a lot of fun events coming up for the summer. Each event is a tradition, and they are all great fun, so join in when you can. Horseshoes Contest will be June 12. Volleyball looks like a full schedule as always. The Surfing Contest will be Sept. 6 & 7. The Club Team contest will be November 22.
The Luau on July 12th looks like it’s going to be a blast as always, with games for the kids, and a little entertainment for everyone. The Hawaiian Surfing Club will be catering the feast once again. It will be a really fun day for all, so please come on down and join in the festivities. It’s a great family day to relax and have fun at the beach. This year’s Luau will be dedicated to Les Williams, who always did a great job of planning it. He is sorely missed. After last year’s Luau, Les said, “Wow, that was the best ever. It’ll be hard to beat.” You were right, Les. Let’s have a great time in his memory.
All Club merchandise has the official club logo. The Club “Store” will be open at the events, so please come and take a look at the new items and remember, all proceeds go back to the beach. So buy, buy, buy! It’s a great club. Fly the colors.

Here you will find the dates of events, and you can print an application online. Please get your friends who enjoy and love this beach to join also.

NATURE IS ALIVE AND WELL AT SAN ONOFRE

Those who were lucky enough to be at the beach early Saturday morning were witness to a spectacular sight. Dozens of Dolphins surrounded the entire surfline all morning jumping and splashing and riding waves. However, they were not just passing through as usual, they stayed in the area for several hours. It turns out that one of them was giving birth. It's not clear exactly where she had it but the mother and newborn were no more then 10 feet from shore just north of the point area at the morning high tide. The baby was only about 2 feet long and can be seen in the first photo. It appeared she was teaching it how to swim and breathe. All of the other Dolphins who were surrounding the area continued to jump and frolic. After several hours they all packed up and headed out to sea with baby doing just fine.

GOLDEN YEARS VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT HELD JULY 15, 2007

This was the 22nd annual Golden Years tournament, directed by Tom Beard. There were twelve teams made up from the oldest regular SanO VB players on the beach that day.

LES WILLIAMS, R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that we must report that club president Les Williams passed away in Hawaii this past friday. This picture of Les is from our most recent luau on July 7th. He was the man that made it happen every year. He was also a key player in putting on the annual surfing contest every September. Les was one of the few people who had pretty much dedicated his retirment to the club. He went to the beach just about everyday that he was in town no matter what the conditions just make sure all was running ok. He was a club member since the inception and served in some sort of official capacity much of the time. He never expected anything in return other then the satisfaction of his fellow members enjoying a job well done.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughter Karen, and son Gary. His other son Jeff passed away several year earlier.

SIDE-OUTS FROM THE COURTS - VOLLEYBALL NEWS

First, last and always, San Onofre Beach is a SURFING beach and The San Onofre Surfing Club is a non-profit organized club for surfers. Virtually all ocean front State and County and City and Private beaches have some degree of surfing activity and they all have volleyball activity. Just like surfing, bocce ball, party-time, and body watching, volleyball is a natural part of beach life.

San Onofre Beach is approximately 3,500 feet long and can accommodate 350 vehicles on any one crowded day. Of that 3,500 feet only about 150 feet of sand beach near the South end of the beach is dedicated to volleyball activity and the year-round volleyball players (who are also surfers) represent only a small percentage of our consistent annual Club membership roster of 1,000 (plus) members. But year-round, weather and road conditions permitting, the volleyball courts are alive with activity. Even some of the world-class top professional volleyball players occasionally gather at our courts for a fun day of surfing and volleyball. Accepting that volleyball is in fact a natural part of beach life, and although our Club is a surfing club, your elected Board of Directors each year allocates a small amount of our annual Club budget towards the maintenance (with volunteer labor) of the volleyball courts, and The San Onofre Surfing Club also sponsors three annual volleyball tournaments for Club members only.

The first of our annual tournaments is the “Golden Years”. This tournament, for older players only, was suggested back in 1986 by Wally Duesler to allow the older players to compete amongst their own peers, instead of having to go up against those younger “big guns” in competitive tournament play. Wally (57 years young) won 1st place (of course) the first two years, with partner Lin Ephraim in 1986, and Jim Hieatt in 1987. But now, in recent years we just don’t have enough older players to make up an actual tournament. I am exploring a possible change in the format of this tournament. There will be more on that at the end of this Volleyball news. The results of our 2006 21st annual are:

The San Onofre Surfing Club presented four new Wilson AVP volleyballs to the four finalist players, and Wally Duesler, that grand old patron of San Onofre volleyball, awarded his magnificent hand carved works of art to Kevin and Mike as winners, and to Pegi and Liz as the outstanding lady players (Wally is very partial to the ladies).

Our 2nd annual tournament is open to all Club Member regular volleyball players who want to compete. In our San Onofre Surfing Club volleyball tournaments contestants do not enter as a team. Individuals who want to compete sign-up at least one week prior to tournament day. Their playing capability is judged and “rated” by their peers, and on the Saturday morning of the tournament the contestants are individually teamed up thru a choosing process: a high rated with a lower rated.

Our 38th annual tournament was played on Saturday and Sunday, September 26th and 27th, 2006. We had 58 contestants who had signed-up earlier and SHOWED UP ON TIME Saturday morning to form 29 teams. Round-robin play on Saturday determines the top eight teams to advance to the Sunday finals.

Except for the final championship game on Sunday, the Saturday afternoon of this annual tournament is the most intense time. The highlight of the afternoon was at about 3:00 P.M. when the road was all lit up with flashing red lights on Ranger cars, fire trucks, and paramedic ambulance to hall me off to the hospital emergency room. I had been placed on prescription drugs to control irregular heart rhythms. As it turned out the prescribed dosage was in fact an overdose and I passed out when my heartbeat got down to a life-threatening 36. It took four nights and five days in the hospital intensive care to correct that blunder. I am sure that Dave Kulstad, designated tournament Director, did a top-notch job of finishing the Saturday eliminations and the Sunday finals. Thank you Dave, I am sure you would.

The results of our 2006 38th annual tournament are:

Of the 16 players (8 teams) who made it to the Sunday finals, we had seven females, including three in the final championship game, a new record.

The San Onofre Surfing Club awarded the usual four Wilson AVP volleyballs and commemorative plaques to the final four finalists, and Wally Duesler again donated as awards several of his hand-crafted replicas of marine wild life.

Our 3rd and final San Onofre Surfing Club sanctioned volleyball tournament of the year is the annual “Wind & Sea Invitational”, always held on the Sunday of the Labor day weekend, started in 1975 as a tournament for volleyball enthusiast employees of the Dana Point Wind & Sea Restaurants, but played on the San Onofre volleyball courts. Times change and people change. By the early 1980’s most all of the top rated players were regular San Onofre folks, and few if any were Wind & Sea personnel. By the late 1970’s the State was rigidly enforcing the “Special Event Permit” requirement for any organized group activity on The State Beach. In 1982, after much discussion, the San Onofre Surfing Club Board of Directors agreed with me that the club should sanction and co-sponsor the annual event, and secure the necessary permit under the following conditions: 1) All participants must be current regular members of The San Onofre Surfing Club; 2) No cash awards (cash awards or prizes would make it a professional sport event; and 3) a designated San Onofre Surfing Club Official would over-see the event to assure that the best interest of the Club prevail.

Invitations to participate in this tournament are extended on the prior weekend to 16 of the higher rated players, (plus three alternates). The results of the 32nd annual Wind & Sea Invitational Volleyball Tournament, held on Sunday September 3rd are:

1st place: Mike Murphy and Shawn Fitzgerald (advance seeded #1)
2nd place: Tom Beard and Greg Smith (advance seeded #2)
3rd place: Steve Uchytil and Scott French
4th place: Wardy Bandel and Dave Kulstad
5th place: Dean Delfs and Mike Riley
6th place: John Safarik and Danny Moore

Shawn was 1st alternate; other alternates would have been Larry Mear and Mario Citro.

San Onofre Surfing Club awarded the usual four new Wilson volleyballs and commemorative plaques, and Wind & Sea Restaurants Company President Bob Mardian awarded restaurant gift certificated and logo wearing apparel, total value approximately $500.00.

At the beginning of this volleyball new section I mentioned that a possible change in the format of the “Golden Years” tournament might be realistic due to the current disparity in age and playing ability in the older players in this highly competitive two man tournament play.

Try this on for size and please let me know your thoughts:
No advance sign-up required. At 9:00 A.M. on tournament day the oldest 16 players who show up, present on the beach, and want to compete, will be signed-up. The oldest four will be designated “team Captain”, or “chooser”. The oldest one will choose one player from the remaining 14 players. Then the second oldest will choose one, and so on, in order, until all players are formed into four four-person teams. Round-robin play, (each team will play against each of the other three teams), to determine the two top teams for the final championship game. I think the “format”, or something like it will help keep the spirit and meaning of “Golden Years Tournament” alive for the real senior citizen players, and yet keep the middle-age “hot players” interested in competing because all teams will (hopefully) be as “balanced” as possible to allow and encourage all players to aim for the Club Championship. Please let me know your thoughts.
