Erik Wesley Hops 1956-2007

Erik Hops, second-generation waterman and son of Frank and Paula Hops passed away on January 20, 2007 following a heroic battle with cancer.

Erik was born in Pasadena and spent summers in San Clemente. Before he could walk, Erik had a love for the ocean. Erik cut his teeth in the shore break at T-Street and began surfing and entering the annual contest at San Onofre by the age of 4. Erik went on to essentially dominate the San Onofre Surfing Contest throughout the 1960’s, 70’s, and well into the 80’s.

Erik eventually moved to San Clemente permanently and graduated from San Clemente High School in 1974. He soon became a skilled carpenter and framed many custom homes and room additions over the years in and around south Orange County. Erik loved to explore large surf and feed his family and friends by using his inherited skills to harvest the ocean.

He is survived by his joyous 7 year old daughter, Rachel, his mother Paula, brothers Mike and Steve, and countless friends.

We love him, will always feel his love and are better people for having known him.

There will be paddle out memorial at San Onofre Old Man’s break Sunday, Jan 28, 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a contribution to the 529 college savings plan for Rachel. (details available from hops424@gmail.com)Posted by Picasa
